Re: I agree completely... However,

you will get alot of different opinions on the naim vs linn cd sound. I have my own opinion based on long term listening and i can safely state that it is almost a win win situation. However my personal favorite naim is the cdx/ps and that is about to be replaced - so hang on. Unfortunetly neither the present cdx or the cd5 are quite the same performer without outboard power supply.

The naims have a very nice sound ... certainly a bit darker & richer than any linn i have heard. However the linn(s) have more information in the frequency extremes (given your system can reproduce them properly) and are more transparent. Depending on your taste - or even the music you prefer - they both offer high value.

The Karik/Numeric does some things that even well founded mid-priced players still cannot do. As an example - althought the linn combo is a bit dry in tone ... it reproduces the high frequencies better than most current players mid-priced players. Thats said - if the high frequencies are incorrect fatigue will soon set in for me, and i loose interest in further listening.

Like you stated - the linn combo will be hard to beat so take your time and audition as many as possible. My advice to you is to go and listen the the best players available - even though you cannot afford them. That will give you a reference of the type of sound quality you intend to adhere too.

IMO the sound should always be relaxed and yet with the ability to deliver powerfull dynamics with true instrumental and vocal representation - and no compression. Few 16/44 players really achieve that, esp at the lower price levels. To a degree - the linns & naims do, but so does the Sim Nova and a few others ... and even the Ayre CD7 i heard last night was capable.
