The Redbook playback on the Sony players has not been that good, IMO. YMMV. A LOT of people have them modded. If you do go with an SACD player, irregardless of the oohs and ahhs on the hi rez forum, be prepared to budget some $$$ for modifications if you want your new player to compete with the best RB playback currently available for 3k.New and used players in this range I have enjoyed listening to: Cary 306, Wadia 831, Meridian 508.24, Linn Ikemi.
Other contenders: the new Ayre already mentioned, the new Cary 308T, the Electrocompaniet, Arcam FMJ CD23, Musical Fidelity, Gamut, Naim.
I listened a lot to the Sony players but could never like their RB abilities. The recordings on SACD weren't enough to tempt me...so I've been very happy with my Cary 303.
