"Theoretically, all transports should sound the same."From purely a data perspective, true..... (Although I have encountered a few transports that "resample" the data, which I would personally avoid at all costs.)
"Newp, not my experience. I have a transport that rolls off in the upper mid range."
A rolloff implies behaving like a low-pass filter..... Unless you meant to say "suckout" or "depression" in a certain frequency range...... A rolloff in the upper midrange means that the highs are absent or muted.
"So, how are DACs tuned to a house sound without a DAC to lean on?"
I think you meant "transport to lean on".....
"My Leak is rolled off while it's Audiolab cousin is leaner and extended. Where in the signal chain are the changes made?"
The perceived sound of a digital system is dictated by "jitter signature" and RFI artifacts...... Systems that do poorly here tend to sound "dull" and "lifeless"..... Different transports interact differently with different DACs..... Which in turn behave differently with different digital cables..... But this is not a "plug and play" endeavor, if you want to optimize the presentation..... You will need to experiment with different combinations, including the cable..... This is sort of a "black art".... This is why whenever I find a digital source that does work, I'm kind of reluctant to try new things.
