Re: Ack!DAC: Blackness and overall level compensation

Were the two units level matched ? I have modified components and found that a black background silence can give you the perception of a lower output level. The false A324 "Vegas" detail will reveal itself as sibilance on voices (leading edges of "s" sounds and "t" sounds). Although many say that a blacker background allows more information to come through at the "same" gain position, I find that these units need to (and can be) played back cleaner at higher overall volume and gain settings: You get the same accustomed to dynamic range of artificial/sibilant Vegas sounding units but with much better low level information, lower sibilance and higher "real" peak level.
