...while waiting for laundry, and you piqued my curiosity. Did some hunting around, and it looks to me like you'd be hard-pressed to find anything costing more than $50, and any more deluxe models you may find are old stock by now.
Sony: Still has a few refurbished closeouts on Sonystyle USA (see Shop:Outlet:MP3 & Portable Electronics Outlet) and a few more models listed on the Japanese site, but they don't appear to be new models.
Panasonic: Nothing on the USA or Japan web sites.
Philips: Nothing on the USA site.
Aiwa: Web site seems to be down.
Best Buy: Has a couple of Insignia-brand models
Otherwise, about all I'm coming up with are Coby and GPX, and I have no experience with those.
Random thoughts: Even in the glory days of portable disk players, I was never blown away by the sonics of any of them, but I did think that More Batteries + Crappier Battery Life = Better Sound. Seemed to me that some sonic compromises got made in order to get 100 hours of run time out of a couple of AA batteries. The old Radio Shack CD3400 was alright. I think it used 4XAA cells.
