Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Additional information

Charlie,

One of the big problems with ethernet is the drivers on the computer side. You basically have too fool the operating system into thinking it's has virtual DAC sitting somewhere in it's system.

As for WIFI... I would not really write that off so fast. One thing I am working on is a WIFI/Ethernet USB bridge. This would basically allow a small computer running Linux to ack ( I mean act, you can see I have been writing too many protocol's these days :) as a bridge. These miniture PC's are real quick and are intel based and run off a linear 5v supply without any switching components on the mother board.

Since we are only talking about audio data... in the 24/96 realm we are taking about basically 4.6MBPS (mega bits per second). Throughput on wireless G is about 5 times that at full rate. I have the new N and ran tests using my MacBookSSD and my ethernet teathered MacPro and I was able to sustain about 70MBPS.

Beats running cables....

The issue of noise from the WIFI is killed because it's in a seperate enclosure.

Another thing USB... Win98's drivers will not work in most audio setups. Only in XP with the second rev of USB drivers did it even support Asynchronous mode. But really Vista is the superior os for USB as DJ really did a great job in making them not only rock solid but more true to the spec.

Thanks
Gordon
