Re: NAD M55 Universal Disc Player -- First Impressions

If the M3 isn't doing it for you in the midrange, try a step up to a McIntosh integrated. The 6300 or 6500. Grail would be the 6900 but it's a big step up in price. I haven't heard the M3 yet. A friend who has, and whose judgment I usually find reliable, thinks it kicks sand in the face of the megabuck solid state integrateds, but then neither of us have ever had any respect for Krell. A few other people have posted impressions of the M3 indicating it's not bad, just not exceptional in any way. Which is what you'd expect of an amp designed to do no wrong and not intrude. Hard to say, since so many people have been conditioned to seek "hifi" sound, so when something natural hits their ears they are disappointed. But the Mac integrateds do get the critical mid right. You could also try a Lavardin integrated, which would address that issue too. Based on your description of what's lacking I don't think it is the M55 other than that you're still listening to digital.
