This is nothing new. It goes back decades. You just read the reviews and hopefully hear some of the gear and then decide what the reviews are worth to you. You can also question relationships of reviewers to manufacturers built up over years. Again read a lot of the reviews and judge. Consistency in describing performance is a good indication of honesty. Anyway I find reading the stuff fun even though I often disagree(which in itself doesn't imply dishonesty).
Anyway the only reviewer I knew well in the 70s was Gordon Holt. I helped him schlep stuff and stuff envelopes. And Gordon was as honest as they come, to the point that he would openly apologize in print when he goofed.
