Origin of manufacture

One thing that would attract me back to reading professional reviews is information about manufacturing: where are the key components made, and where is the product assembled?

This information is often hard to come by. The larger manufacturers loathe discussing it unless it's part of their marketing strategy. I get that they want flexibility to change suppliers, move production, and make small design changes for the sake of producibility - without exposing the consumer to multiple model variations. But most people who are into high end audio want to be more like connoisseurs than ordinary consumers.

The elephant in the room is the question of China. A certain percentage of potential customers want to avoid Chinese-made equipment. I couldn't put a number on it, but it's not insignificant. So a lot of manufacturers make it difficult to know what's being made in China. They won't put it on their website, don't answer direct questions, and you have check out the product in person to see the country of origin label, which doesn't tell you much. Every part and sub-assembly could be outsourced, and the country of origin label will only tell you where the final assembly took place, if that.
