RE: "Stereophile never targeted the DIY crowd"

Actually they did do a DIY issue once in the 60s after one of their long interludes between issues. It was an article on how to build a super version of the Dynaco Stereo 70 that used the circuit and transformers. It was not well received with readers complaining vociferously that almost the whole issue was on the amplifier knocking out almost everything they had waited too long for(remember this was before any other 'underground mags existed). The article was by Ed Dell and it was a big part of the reason Ed Dell started Audio Amateur magazine for DIYers.
