RE: there seems to be a big divide between tinkerers and end-users

Mark,

From my experience with both the "build" vs "buy" camps (and I'm still an avid but recovering recovering DIYer), the build guys are predominately engineers (type)and as such are driven by different motivations.

One, whom you also know, "confessed" to me that it's primarily his ego - that he can do things "better" - that drives him to experiment in ALL aspects of audio.

There's also a monetary issue at play here. Very few of these guys would ever consider spending four figures on anything audio. Of course, now most everything audio starts in four figures. PS - I've NEVER met a female audio or ham DIY'er

Finally there's the gear vs music issue. From what I can see/hear?, the DIY'ers are in it for the gear - USING music to "test" their observations/results. I was and now am partly through the 10-step method to overcome my addiction.

Ed Dell's publications and now AudioXpress were/are the "last gasp"
in the US DIY audio print world - kudoes to Jan Didden for trying valiantly in Europe. AudioXpress has changed it's focus away from primarily DIY but websites, particularly DIYaudio are where "the action is" today.
