RE: Partly True

I am a 13 year veteran school teacher in Oregon. I will make $78,000 this year. The top step in our current contract goes to $96,000, and that is for a 200 day contract, basically 40 weeks. Inside that forty weeks, we get 6 paid holidays, 10 sick days, and 4 personal days to use on whatever. We have excellent health benefits, I have to pay nothing out of pocket for Medical and Dental PPO coverage. The Tier 1 Pension Retirees will receive a pension for life starting after 30 years of service, regardless of age, some are as young as 52 or 53. That pension will be AT LEAST as large as their final average salary. (Unfortunately, I joined the profession several years too late to get into that scam). Starting teacher pay in my district is $42,000. Keep in mind most workers start out with a 250 day work year, so that $42,000 is more like $53,000 to start when compared to the private sector full time worker. Not bad for someone going through one of the least challenging college programs. When I got my Masters before entering the profession, the curriculum seemed less challenging than most of the high school classes I had in the 70's.

In addition, throughout your career as a teacher, you have no additional requirements or performance expectations beyond that of a newbie teacher who passes their probationary period. Where in the private sector can you be doing an entry level job and receive more than double what the entry level worker is paid? When I worked in the High Tech industry, if you couldn't advance your skill set and get promoted, you usually didn't last; or at the very best, you would rarely get a raise.

I admit there are challenges with undisciplined students, students with significant emotional issues, etc.; however if you keep a cool head, and learn to reason with adolescents (I teach 7th grade math), the days can be really good. Not a bad gig at all.

I'm actually pretty good.
