Since MP3 and Napster and all the descendants, music has become devalued financially.
My own inexact analogy is that of people who had to buy bottled water, then got water taps installed in their houses. They might still buy bottled water, but they sure wouldn't pay as much.
So for over a decade artists have navigated this new landscape. There are still many labels large and small, but there is also a whole lot of independent distribution. Artists have had to find new income sources, the small pittance from streaming, but mostly live performance. I am sure it's harder to get rich as a musician, but it was never easy anyway.
Despite the doom and gloom that music will die soon, I see more music in every category being released now than ever before. So far, music is doing just fine.
I don't think the service linked in the article is all that innovative. Musicians do these things already without paying google.
