RE: Man, its 2017. How many black reviewers does S'phile have? How about other hifi mags/e-zines?

That is correct. I don't regard race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference,
religious belief, etc, as being relevant to my hiring practices. The following
are what I look for in a writer (prompted by an email discussion with John
Marks):

1) He or she can turn in on time copy that does not need re-writing, just
routine copy-editing;

2) That they have at minimum a basic knowledge of audio, its engineering
basis, and its technical and cultural history.

3) That they have learned how to listen carefully and know how to put those
impressions into words, so that they are transportable; ie, under the same
circumstances the reader will hear what the writer heard.

4) That their writing style appeals both to me and to a significant fraction
of the readership.

Note that as you can see at hi-fi shows, audiophiles come in all ethnicities.
They are not all middle-aged white men like me. :-)

Note, BTW, that while my most recent hire has not yet started reviewing
for Stereophile, she has created a strong identity with her blogging and
videography for our 4 websites. (See link below.) Charley Hansen can attest
to this as Jana shot video interviews for us at Ayre Acoustics in the fall
of 2016.

Jana is a 24 year-old woman of Philippino-Chinese descent. That is not why
I hired her. I hired her because of her talent.
