That was a simpler time, Charley. Not only were there many fewer manufacturers
and products, Gordon was running a one-man operation, governed by his own
tastes in music and sound reproduction. By the late 1970s, he was publishing
other writers and their tastes had to be taken into account, hence
the appearance of disparate products in "Recommended Components."

Not only does Stereophile now represent a much wider range of opinions and
tastes than it ever did in Gordon's time, as I have written I skew the
balance of what products we review toward those that have the greatest
chance of sounding good. This was the case with my review of the Ayre QX-5
Twenty in the current issue, for example. And this is not just because
reviewers prefer to write about products they will enjoy listening to, but
also, contrary to what the writer quoted in your original post said, because
readers don't want to read negative reviews. (Readers don't hesitate to
let me know!)
