This is a point that too many overlook: that the contributors to a
mainstream magazine or webzine have to satisfy their editors that what
they have to say is worth publishing. The editor has to be convinced that
their opinions are reliable, repeatable, transportable, and worth paying
for.You will remember the times I visited your place, John, or when we
listened together at shows. These may have seemed convivial occasions
but they were actually ongoing tests of your suitability to continue
writing for Stereophile. Each time I was asking myself "Do I hear what
you describe?"I always did.
