aaaaaHH,,,,ZENITH

Mr. H.F. Tommy,

ze·nith (znth)
n.
1. The point on the celestial sphere that is directly above the observer.
2. The upper region of the sky.
3. The highest point above the observer's horizon attained by a celestial body.
4. The point of culmination; the peak: the zenith of her career. See Synonyms at summit.

[Middle English senith, from Old French cenith, from Medieval Latin, from Arabic samt (ar-ra's), path (over the head), from Latin smita, path; see mei-1 in Indo-European roots.]

I think these old black and white, tube televison machines are wonderful objects- massive as a small house and oddly foreboding- they have the look of a demented face. The knobs on the top are bulging, staring eyes and the bottom of the tube surround was done made a leering grin. "Zenith" is a slightly strange word too if only because we don't hear so many words beginning with "Z". Plus, it's used in the case of the TV according to the 4th definition. Wasn't "zenith" the big slick city in "Babbit" the city of the silly promoter full of "pep and boost"?

There has to be a dedicated group of enthusiasts who restore these, publish a glossy newsletter where there are terrible knock down fights over what kind of plug a 1947 Osram-Marconi had. Once a year they go to Cinncinati and watch "I Love Lucy" at swinging conferences, where they laugh about the improbability of sex and get plastered on Tang.

Now, a poem:

Zenith, 1958

Oh! Zenith of Zeniths! Black and white CRT, tube televisions
Why have you flown from our lives too soon?!
Where is the comfort of your 400lb.?
Where is the warmth of your forty glowing valves?
It was always Christmas in the belly of a 1958 Zenith!
Where does the snow drift now?
It doesn't snow in Plasma!
Where are the ghosts of my tuning drift?
Where is my infinite roll when I lost vertical hold?
Where is my horizontal hold when I needed to be held?
Where is the point on the celestial sphere that is directly above the observer?
Oh, Zenith of Zeniths, I wish you were the City I live in!
