"Stereophile" style- A bit cluttered and features "The Deadbeats' Popup"

PAINTING: "A Visiting Bishop"

Bill the K,

One reason I think Audiogon dominates online used high end sales is that the home page is a clean- uncluttered, symmetrical style and that is attractive. I's even slightly elegant and that fits the price tags of the stuff offered within!

And "Stereophile" has a fairly good layout, but it somehow still feels a bit cluttered. Personally, I would prefer a starker home page-and no, none, not any, zero advertising! Ever notice that the Google home page has no advertising and it's the most popular search engine? Then on the content pages, keep the adverts in a column on one side of the page- no banners or footers. Clean, clean, clean,.. After all, as there is no printing cost pre se for extra pages online, why not have more negative space- those pages are suffocating- let them breathe a little!

Something that puts me off tremendously- I give up on the online "Stereophile" these days after three minutes- is the popup subscription ad that appears over every single damn page and/or refresh. Sure, I get the point- yes I'm a terrible deadbeat for only buying "Stereophile" on the newsstand for thirty times the subscription price! I'm an old fashioned reader and am willing to pay for the newsstand experience because of the delights of reading serendipity. I like to laugh at "Architectural Digest", skim the British car rags, and smirk at "TAS" when I'm out.

Actually "Stereophile" is in good company with the deadbeat ad as "The New Yorker" online has the very same thing. Also, Ebay has a constant popup, something about Ebay preferred sellers' shite smelling better than everyone else's and that also appears on every page and covers the listings.

I will not buy or sell on Ebay nor read any online magazine that has the advert popup on every page. Anyway, I'll see everything at the newstands.

Cheers,

Bambi B
