PAINTING: The Temptation of William Blake
howard,
It appears I'm the sole dissenter on this one- my reaction was quite different.
The review begins with a chronological description- the first thing he noticed was the polarity indicator LED- a device I'd never heard of (and which I now really want!), has a section with headings for the main characteristics that interests the reviewer, proceeds with to a clear description of the sound using well-documented recordings, onto a technical and design description and ends with clear conclusions based on both subjective and objective comparisons- logical, easy to navigate, no-nonsense, comprehensive. The interspersing of the photos through the text I thought broke up a long review effectively. This review has enough explanation to be helpful to the uninitiated such as myself who have neither heard of any of the gear nor any of the makers under discussion.
Certainly the style is nothing special, but a lot of ground was covered and the approach seems to be just to get on with it- he has a lot to say and doesn't have time for aspirational, assiduous, anecdotes, agendas, and allegories. Yes, you have to read the whole thing to have the whole picture- it's not a highlights'-skimming style. - Of course, those who know my posts here will know that I have a higher tolerance for lots of words than most people.
I'd heard of but not read "Positive Feedback" before, so perhaps I'm missing something by not knowing the history of this reviewer or the rag? From the comments here, he must be at least a meter maid molester or always wrong about everything. Is "Positive Feedback" a front for misguided subversives who believe that digital sound will someday be tolerable? Didn't Clark Johnson review for "PF" at one time- that may explain a lot.
I feel the flames licking at my feet already,..
Cheers,
Bambi B
