RE: Not an Ayre CD player

Charlie,

You're right up to a point. The main system was the R-1 speakers powered by the Ayre amps (and sounding mighty good in my opinion.) The sources were reel-to-reel tape and a server. They also had a Bel Canto CD player specifically so they could play stuff that visitors brought in. This would normally be done by spinning them on the Bel Canto, feeding digitally into the BADA DAC. It was also possible to play them directlyfrom the server's optical drive to the BADA, and occasionally it was done that way.

In the interest of accuracy even though it has little to do with this discussion, the tape machine was not a Technics. Although we did have Technics transports with Bottlehead playback electronics in several rooms at this show, in the TAD room we had an Ampex ATR-100 with ATR Service HPV-2 electronics.

In closing, I'll make a statement that you are all free to dismiss as self-serving, which of course it is. After listening to the tapes on that system, listening to ANYTHING from CD would sound a little dry and thin.
