Nobody else has come right out and said it, so I will: What he wrote makes no sense at all. Your comprehension skills are just fine.
IF the system sounded wonderful with a tape source, the system is capable of wonderful sound. That's the end of that. Any degradation that results from changing sources can be attributable only to the source.
