Valin walked into the TAD room at the recent CES. The comments were based on a brief listen at a show.
They had two systems, one with prototypes for private showings only (and no Ayre equipment at all). The public system had a pair of TAD Reference One loudspeakers driven by Ayre MX-R amplifiers. The front end consisted of a modified Technics open-reel recorder playing first-generation copies of master tapes (The Tape Project) and a computer-based digital server playing through the new DAC from Berkeley Audio Design Associates.
I wasn't there, but it's not clear that they could even play CD's (as Valin claimed to have done). They presumably would have had to rip the CD to the music server first, but I could be wrong. It seems to me that Valin's report was inaccurate in many ways.
