Hi-
I was told by one of the people best situated to know (in other words, someone legally responsible for the room and who was setting up equipment and running the demo) that for most of the brief time Mr. Valin was in the room that had the Continuum turntable he later disparaged in print, the system was down owing to a phono cartridge changeover, and that when the music started up again, Mr. Valin listened very briefly and got up and left.
I have no knowledge whether TAS had requested a review loan.
I wrote for TAS. I voluntarily left because the score-settling--among writers, and of writers seeking retribution on equipment or manufacturers, or, as in my case, seeking retribution on third parties by disparaging certain disfavored equipment--was totally unprofessional.
When I brought my concerns to HP he circulated emails among other writers calling into question my maturity and my sanity. The only person left writing there now whom I miss as a colleague is Neil Gader. Neil is a no-nonsense gentleman.
After leaving TAS, I waited 30 days and then asked John Atkinson if he needed another writer. The difference in professionalism is as night and day.
I had hopes that when HP was kicked upstairs, the Kremlinology and the toxic atmosphere and constant clamoring to be annointed the fair-haired boy would cease or at least somewhat abate, and the magazine would be better for it. Sad to say, the "episodes" have by reports gotten only worse, and the wagon-circling more choreographed.
It's a real tragedy for the investors and the industry and the readership, but as some old Greek guy said, character is destiny.
Too bad all around, especially for manufacturers caught in thr crossfire, and readers who don't know the backstory.
IMHO they should fire everybody but Neil Gader, and let Roy Gregory run the show. On the count of three, all hold breath...
Later,
JM
