Re: Why would pointing out your inattention "step on my id"?

No, Freud would have likely also observed that you didn't pay attention to the topic about speaker cables (what do preamps have to do with speaker connections?) and simply didn't answer the question posed.

---- The question was answered, I said that I owned one of his amplifiers. The implication would hold that I had read the literature provided with the amplifier. For my hard earned $$$, I will read up on what end users say and see about potential reliability issues. Sorry, I only have but a few moments to surf a day, so I missed the speaker cable part. You and bjh can enjoy that oversight. My statement still holds true for what I was speaking of. As for loudspeaker cables, do spend on. I chose to go active, thus pretty much eliminating such quibles (one of bjh's terms). I spent far less than many here have spent on their esoteric cables by going active. The end result far exceeds that of the high dollar cable.

As a metter (sic) of fact I have read some of his writtings.(sic)

Thank you! That is the answer to the question. Then you understand why simple, low feedback designs (implemented with either tubes or SS) are desirable.

--- Desirable, but not necessarily a guarantee to perfect sound. My little Aleph 30 would melt trying to power your speakers. Driving my tweeters directly it is coasting along.

Why would anyone waste that much money on high $$$ cables for a garage system?

Fair question, although I wouldn't use the word "waste". Most everything in the vintage garage system is either a hand-me-down or surplus from the main one. Using a 400 watt Threshold amp with the DAs is also a bit overkill given that I rarely listen to it above 4 watts total on peaks. On the other hand, it stays in class A at that power. Regarding ICs in general, RF rejection is just as valid with that system as well.

--- When you choose to replace that hand me down Threshold, please do look me up. My upstairs rig is hand me downs as well.

I've heard the A1s many times. The old head stuck in a vise for any semblence of imaging, to me, is a headphone.

While I would agree that is a valid criticism of my older Acoustats, I don't find that to be the case with the U-1s in my room. A 90 degree radiation angle is not particularly narrow. I've yet to hear any headphones shake the room!

--- I must admit, a 90 degree patern is about perfect. Much better than a buddies A-1s. Unlike himeslf, you can listen to music with your better half sitting next to you. I haven't heard headphones shake a room either, but I have heard them go down much lower than people would expect. Say Dave Holland's bass on a fine set of electrostatics.

From 40 Hz on down any planer's (sic) response drops like a rock.

Measured in room response with the U-1s is +/- 1.5 db from 30 hz to 200 hz. There is actually a fortuitous 2 db rise at 25 hz relative to the baseline level due to room effects. While I haven't measured the results, I've heard Magneplanar 20.1s likewise provide solid 30 hz response. I confess that I'm not much of a pipe organ freak nor do I have many recordings with significant output below 25 hz that I am missing. On the other hand, adding a pair of UB-1s would handily address that. No physical laws are violated using over sixty square feet of radiating area or the equivalent of fifty 15" cones. :)

--- Congratulations, with no equalization whatsoever you have achieved what no audiophile alive has ever achieved. +/- 1.5 from 30 - 200 Hz is unheard of. I guess you have defeated the laws of physics. Tube traps et al will get you close, but nowhere near +/- 1.5 Dbs. Do tell. The 25 Hz bump can be a good thing. You must have a 45 foot long room to end up with a bump at 25 Hz. Yeah, I did the math. I won't bother with the width and ceiling numbers. They no doubt will put their own signatures on the final measurements, regardless of your claim.
