Re: Has anybody here ever bought a piece of equipment solely from it's measured specs?

I've printed this before but here goes. I took a copy of Hi Fi Choice to a friend around 1982. At the time the magazine was a small format and tested only one type of product per issue, about 60 of each item. This issue was on cartridges. Included in each review was a frequency response curve and 1 khz square wave. My friend, who had modified and sold Grado pickups(and tested them) paged through the magazine and stopeed at one page and said he had to have that pickup even before he looked at the top of the page to see what it was. He claimed he knew how it sounded. I was surprised, of course. It was a Technics EPC 205 Mk IV moving magnet. At the time we knew nothing about Technics pickups. We bought them and they were everything he expected, a great pickup.
