picky speakers could be argued to be 'part of the problem', couldn't they?Once in a while, folks essay to design loudspeakers that are meant for actual domestic environments. Roy Allison's early eponymous speakers fairly leap to mind -- so do Prof. Bose's, of course.
There were others (e.g., and arguably, the AR-10pi, and many of Design Acoustics' products).The current, rarefied state of audiophilicity * ;) is tailor-made for user-hostile loudspeakers like the Quad ESL-57 and the K-horn (or the Inifinity IRS Beta, for that matter). Audiophiles (to paraphrase that New Yorker cartoon are drawn to their favorites by the expense and the inconvenience.
Sort of like a trophy spouse. :)
