I have a pair of vintage K-horns and EV Georgian K-horn clones. I could never get rid of the mid-bass "hootiness" that Atkinson notes as well as the irritating midrange and low treble colorations. Considering their size, the lack of low bass ( <45Hz) was disappointing. I also discovered as did Atkinson that the low end impedance values are considerably lower than advertised (~3 ohms) and not very tube friendly. Hard to believe they were speced out as nominally 16 ohms. I tried custom xovers and new tweeters and finally gave up trying to make them sound acceptable. I too find most contemporaneous Altec stuff to be much more to my liking even if the the raw sensitivity is not as high as the K-horns. There are good sounding and relatively easy ways around that minor limitation.
