the problem is, few "10 pound" bags exist ...

If a 10 pound bag symbolizes the best potential recording and equipment quality, then rarely, in audio, is that an actual reality ... especially considering the relatively poor quality of equipment and/or mastering/recording over the decades.

Correct, but the Audio industry doesn't work only on those absolute conditions. It's like your pretending to live in some weird audio utopia which fails to exist outside your own studio ... and into audiophile homes.

Furthermore ... you're either ignoring or knowingly dismissing so many iconic 16/44 recordings that without any doubt proved 16/44 to be worthy of capturing "higher-resolution" audio.

Tony, as a very experienced "real" audiophile (not a recording engineer, but one who records on a regular basis) I can tell you without any doubt that SACD has proven superior to 16/44 within my system at times ... however ... that's based on absolute best case scenarios ... again based on the justification/condition of the recording & mastering process.

To that end, the playback systems & equipment choices are so very important, and can destroy the advantage of hi-rez in a jiffy. As an example, I've heard my CDP (given good software) easily destroy turntables and SACD players (playing SACD) ... simply because my CDP has proven to be a true "hi-end" product when playing top-quality software. What's even more telling, is that my CDP destroyed certain SACD players in terms of overall transparency, dynamic resolution, dimensionality, and even more ironic ... frequency extreme accuracy.

And how do you explain, given that top analog has proven superior to 16/44 ... that despite that, even the very best turntables sonics are captured on LP-CDR. (ok, not totally mind you, what is missing isn't always obvious though, that 3 dimensional layering quality that is inherited with better LP & higher rez digital can go AWOL, but this is often based on the mastering quality of the LP anyways)

Tony, it has long been proven that SACD, and even LP, don't win the hi-rez sweepstakes by simply default, as you and Teresa have incorrectly indicated.

Unfortunately, the audio industry as a whole - doesn't work that way.
