Those are very conservative specs

An Ampex 350/351 is down 2 dB at 15 Khz at 15 IPS. If you like rolled off highs, then it's your machine of choice. Yet you claim to have hearing that extends to 22, 23 or maybe even 24 kHz.

It was 24kHz when I was a teenager, and 22kHz in an online test I did several years ago. BTW ultrasonics are inaudible but perceived by the body in other ways and ultrasonics also affect the timbre of audible frequencies. Are Ultrasonics Important? Current Theory and High Resolution Digital

Since deleting my classical music from my harddrive I only found one recording made with the Ampex 350 Thelonious Monk's 5 by Monk by 5 on a Analogue Productions 180 Gram LP that was saved to my hard-drive in AIFF at 24 bit 96kHz I also made a 16/44.1kHz copy using XLD for this test.

What follows is the song "Jackie-Ing" in 24/96

Now the song "Jackie-Ing" in 16/44.1

As you will see from the 24/96 plot the Ampex 350 while its printed specifications are down -2dB at 15kHz, it has a nice smooth roll-off to 45kHz.

Now look at the 16/44.1 version I made the roll-off looks more like a cliff.

Some of the best sounding DSD recorded SACDs are made by Michael Bishop using the Sanken CO-100K microphone whose frequency response extends to 100kHz. CO-100K User's Report from Michael Bishop, Recording Engineer & Producer of Five Four Productions Ltd.

"Once again, your wholesale dismissal of 16/44.1 is more sad than anything else. No one is trying to force you to listen to CDs, but your bias against them is unfounded."

I hate CDs, I find them not only unenjoyable but often painful, big deal. I never said anyone who enjoys them should stop listening to them. I want everyone to enjoy listening to music in whatever format brings them the most pleasure. You are free to hate any and all formats I love and I won't hold it against you.
