Since she has expressed such views here and on other sites, and other equally extremist views, for years, I question the judgment of an organization that would engage her to review audio products on it's behalf."
My views are mine and mine alone, however I believe I am one of the most important reviewers out there. Why? Because I support high resolution analog and digital in all its forms and am not afraid to tell the truth about the poor sound quality of low resolution CD, a format that should by all rights have died decades ago. I don't believe I have ANY extremist views. It's just for whatever reason some pro-CD listeners get offended when others refuse to bow down to their CD religion.
There could be many reasons that a person doesn't hear audible differences between low resolution and high resolution, audio system, synergy, listening room, speaker placement, or even ears. That is why I have always said if one can enjoy CD that is fine by me.
For me, most SACDs, DVD-Audios, 24 bit high resolution downloads, audiophile cassettes and 7½ and 15 ips reel to reels can be made to sound excellent however CDs can't. The logical thing is to listen to music from SACDs, DVD-Audios, 24 bit downloads, audiophile cassettes and reel to reels and not listen to CDs. Yet some people take offensive at me not being able to enjoy music from CDs. Why?
What is it about CD players that make them varying degrees of strident and uncomfortable at any price range? Although I will admit some of the pricer CD players actually sound somewhat smoother but still unacceptable sonically. Even tubes don't help, such as those by Cary Audio.
And why is there any living person in 2012 still defending the highly compromised CD format?
Perhaps reading what Mark Levinson said might help you gain some perspective.
Mark Levinson: CD vs. SACD and LP
"Most music lovers feel that there is something wrong with the CD. Many prefer the sound of their LP's, or have cut down or stopped listening to music without even realizing why. Classical CD's aren't selling, while LP's of the same repertoire fetch hundreds of dollars a copy. People used to have 20 or 30 LP's and enjoy them, while now, people have hundreds or thousands of CD's which they rarely listen to, and almost never hear all the way through. What's going on?
Research shows that the pulse code modulation (PCM), the operating system of the CD, has limitations that so far cannot be overcome. There is something about listening to sound that has been processed with PCM which is stressful - the opposite of what most people seek in listening to music.
Sony has introduced a new digital operating system called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) which doesn't seem to create this stress reaction. DSD sounds much better than PCM, but more importantly, it is like analogue in the sense that it is very relaxing and joyful to listen to. DSD is the operating system of the new Super Audio CD (SACD). With good SACD recordings, people find they want to listen to music again with excitement and satisfaction. Because of DSD, it is now possible to revitalize the music world. Combining SACD with RRM equipment brings out the full benefits of SACD."
