RE: Dogmatic adherence to questionable 'truths'

Right - starting with the high res master, then systematically determining the sonic effects of variable frequency rolloff and/or reducted bit depth is the way to evaluate the sonic impact of such changes.

In my experience, the bit depth and the mastering make more of a difference in most commercial releases than high frequency extension or DSD vs. PCM. Point being, I have CDs which sound better than some SACDs, and that comes down to the master. I also have remasters of old recordings (with microphone-limited high frequency extension) which sound preferable to some modern recordings with more extended high frequencies.

Frequency vs sound - it's rather pedantic to make that point.
