RE: Dogmatic adherence to questionable 'truths'

Hey, I play with all of these formats. They all sound different. I have software to convert between them so I can compare the advantages and disadvantages of various formats when listening to the same original recording. Most mastering engineers who work with all of the formats reach similar conclusions.

One can hear these effects when starting with a high resolution digital file and down converting it, or when starting with an analog tape and digitizing it. This is the only way to tell if a sonic difference comes from the limitation of the format or is a characteristic of a particular recording. Of course, this method isn't perfect, because one is still subject to the limitations of one's equipment, especially the conversion software. The software that I use has many different settings which are user settable. This enables one to explore tradeoffs and learn to hear the various types of sonic distortion that are characteristic of the possible transformation.

As to hearing "frequencies", our ears hear "sound" not "frequencies".
