I do not use that method, which is not to say that it may not work for someone else. The issue I have with this method, is that we are trying to analyse something we cannot satisfactorily quantify. For example, we cannot listen to a track and record our ratings on a calibrated scale. Our notes may only say that "the drum kit was placed inside and behind the left speaker". But we cannot ask our ears to measure a precise and reliable 3D vector of the drum's location. If we were able to do that then we could compare to a component years later and confidently say "unitA placed the drum kit 3 feet behind and 4 feet to the outside of unitB. Therefore, unitA has a wider/deeper soundsatge".
The only workable solution I can come up with, is to repeat a short segment often (so as to temporarily burn-into memory)and then immediately switch to a level-matched)component. The result is I can reliable say "unitA seemed to place the drumkit a little further behing and outside where unitB place the drums. Therefore, unitA has a deeper/wider soundstage".
