Like Mr. Black, I guess, I thought JA was being cleverer than the 'benchmark' remark. When you reviewed the DAC-1 waay back in 2003, I promptly got one on trial. Note to Mr. Black: you CAN have in-home demos. I also got, on trial, an up-scale Birdland d2a and did some comparisons. Now, I'm aware that there are a LOT of folks out there that don't believe in blind testing or even short term A/B tests (see all the virulent replies to my old post, if you have the patience). I just present my thoughts for your consideration. In my defense, I did have the pieces for the 30 day trial period, so I felt I got to know them. Bottom line: if I(you) can't tell the difference, then no purchase need be required. Consequently, I never could understand the love of you and JA for the Benchmark. Perhaps over headphones (which I did not try, since I don't listen to music that way) I would have a different opinion. This exercise has also led me to question the value of up and over sampling schemes.
I am not claiming to have as trained an ear for audio equipment as you and JA, but, ultimately, I must acceed to my own hearing.
For Mr. Black's edification, the $850 price was for the Benchmark, the $1700 for the Birdland and the old $800 CDP was a JVC XL-Z1010.
I'm not sure this post has anything to do with 'Critics Corner". Guess I felt a need to respond to the Benchmark thingy.
