LOL, the speaker cable scam is right up there with AIG and Enron. Every time I see an ad for $11,000 cables it makes me want to abandon the hobby.
Sure, cables can change the sound, mostly because you're altering the cable's impedance (and maybe cleaning oxidation and dirt off the connector and getting more or less RFI). But there are easier ways to compensate for a glaring midrange than using a different cable, and it's nothing less than fraud to charge $11,000 for something that could be done with a few dollars's worth of parts.
I had the misfortune of speaking to a high-end cable manufacturer once, and he knew about as much about engineering as I do about the neural circuitry of nematode worms.
What makes this scam doubly ridiculous is that, with the possible exception of a few purist recordings, the signal has in the studio gone through vast quantities of very run-of-the-mill cable and connectors in the studio.
