Great question.
Magazines, esp. in audio, don't in general operate on a a high profit margin. In fact, many audio magazines operate on a shoestring budget-and many fail because of undercapitalization (passion overcomes reality here). In fact, most magazines don't pay for their reviewers to attend CES and thus the reviewers pay out of their own pocket.
For other reviewers, it's a question of how many articles must one write to make a living at say $1200 each? (one doesn't want to sacrifice quality for quantity either!) It's kinda like NFL referees-none of them are full time and they are only paid a couple of hundred dollars per game! And then they're expected to be on top of their game when a crucial call happens.
To my knowledge, there's only a few high-end writers for either Stereophile or TAS who receive a full time salary to review and write. And they tend to write the bulk of the articles in the magazines since they're not paid by the article. Thus the magazine achieves somewhat of a fixed cost option here.
