"I don't presume to speak for all the Telarcs of that era, but I assure you that the impact of the concert drum in the '78 ASO recording of The Firebird was quite realistic."
That has not been my experience; so we will have to agree to disagree on that one.
"Which is exactly the point of my commentary."
By prefacing my remarks with "Sure," I was conceding your point. But again, audiophiles are by now painfully aware that "quieter" and "lower" do not necessarily make for the sort of concert hall realism that the Mercs excel at. That's the second part of my point and one that you seem to ingore.
"Only a very few engineers have seen wisdom to use the simpler miking technique found in the best of those early recordings."
Perhaps you're correct, but at first blush your exclamation strikes me as overly simplistic. There have been myriad recording companies that have mimicked the minimalist mic-technique that you refer to. A case in point being "The Firebird Suite," from Sheffield Labs, in which Doug Sax used a single-point microphone. That recording, by the way, does not go overboard with the bass drum a la Telarc, nor convey the concert hall realism of the Merc.
