myles-
no doubt, there are many road that lead to mecca; and broad-brushing is unfair not to mention inaccurate. my point is that reference level equipment is exceedingly expensive, regardless of the resale restrictions and acquiring it on the front end requires either shit load of discretionary income(even factoring in a tax write-off). The 'honesty' part of my post simply relates to upfront acknowledgment that equipment was purchased at industry discount. It is the one way reviewers can acknowledge to their readers that they, the reviewers, have unequal access to equipment and that they, via their honesty, have some sense of understanding and respect for the limitations in purchasing power of their readers. Once this basic honesty is expressed, reviewers and readers can have an honest conversation about 'value', worth' and comparisons of more or less expensive equipment.
Whether or not equipment is purchased on special accommodation price then sold according to industry limitations in order to purchase new 'reference' equipment is of no concern to me; that is what the typical audio person does as part of his hobby: buying and selling is the coin of the realm.
