Think about it... tubes, tubes, and more tubes. Transistors never entered into the picture. So maybe meaqsured improvements really are irrelevent.
Did you ever notice that the majority of "reference" recordings were made prior to 1970 (the beginning of the "transistor age".) Yes, there are some lauded recordings (Lyrita, EMI, some rock and jazz), but fewer recordings are recognized for quality from the "transistor age" and fewer still from the "digital age". Food for thought.
