Re: The Telarc 1812

I was an early enthusiast of the Telarc stuff, only to have my bubble burst upon taking a few offerings to a friend so he could hear what all the excitement was about. My friend was nearly twenty years older than I and boasted quite a collection of Mercs, early RCA and Decca. The first comparison consisted of comparing Mercury’s mono recording of the 1812, with Telarc's version. Point to Merc. That said, I think the Telarc “Firebird,” Saint-Saens Symphony No.3, and “The Rite of Spring” are superb recordings. Moreover, the “golden ears” of that period who reviewed for Stereophile and TAS must have thought so too, inasmuch as they used these Telarc offerings as reference recordings for years.
