Re: well that's not quite fair

"So, 'perfect sound forever' is not such a bad slogan..."

Agreed. And the “slogan” part can’t be emphasized enough. While most of us are uneasy about “perfect” being used in any such application, CDs have proven “good enough” for the vast majority of listeners. Of course, this is unacceptable for those taking a narrow view (read: audiophiles), but I don’t think Sony had that fringe group in mind when it went to the time and expense of developing said technology. (A technology that was always intended to be marketed to the masses.) The phrase was pure corporate hype. Yet audiophiles react to it as though Messrs. JGH and HP had made the claim from on high. :)
