more on this toc memory problem

< < I have noticed this phenomenon for years, though I was not aware of what caused it. Loading the disk and playing for a few seconds, and then opening the tray and reloading the disk always caused a change in perceived sound, usually an improvement (less bright and a little more weight in the low end). > >

your observation is exactly the same as mine. when a track is re-play either with or without re-loading the disk, the perceived sound will change, and the way you described is what i initially perceived. but, in a different system, with different listener's past experiences, you can interpret the perceived changes in different ways!

i used to advocate the 12 sec repeat procedure without re-loading the disc. that's because at that time the gain in weight in the low-end and rounding off brightness can be rather appealing. there are those who disagree. i remember that christine tham posted in hi-rez board that she preferred the sound without the repeats (she hears a difference too!).

in time i came to realise that the low-end weight gain and forward-movement in imaging were at the expense of something else. i progressively felt that i was missing out on details of recording venue cues, and other subtle, but important details of the musical performances. there is a parallel similarity when you compare to another tweak that some inmates here advocate - that is correcting for ac power orientation of some components. when the ac plug of components are plugged into the mains at inverted polarity (higher chassis voltage leakages), you also get low-end weight gain and forward-sounding perspective. reverting to correct ac polarity, restores soundstaging to its natural size and more laid back perspective. vocals gets natural bloom and height restored. for me this later is simply more natural and less-fatiguing.

so reloading the disc is important, but erasing the toc information (shutting down the player) completely initialize the player for even more accurate (and musical) performance.
