It occurs to me that the idea of break-in could be tested. It actually could be done pretty easily.
Take a few samples of whatever. Measure them to be sure that they are similar - ideally identical. It might be enlightening to find out how closely various samples match.
Have a short listen to each, too. Just to add to the subjective perspective. It might be enlightening to find out if seemingly identical units sound the same.
Then, take one of the samples and burn it in using whatever technique might seem reasonable. Whether it's continuous loud music for 500+ hours or sweep signals doesn't matter. Or, perhaps, burn in all but one of the samples using various techniques, just to compare.
Now, measure all the units again. And listen again. Maybe not in that order - dunno! Then tell the rest of us what was observed.
Of course, there'd have to be some rigor applied to make sure the test conditions are as close to identical as possible. That would mean placing loudspeakers or amplifiers in exactly the same spot. Using a torque wrench to tighten the connections the same. And, so on. Whatever it takes to make the conditions the same, even if the variables might seem to be superfluous. (You never know...)
Is there something there, or not? It's easy to just explain something away to some sort of bias. Far less work. And, to be fair, most hobbyists at home aren't going to spring for several test samples for an experiment like this. I guess it'll either take a wealthy hobbyist with the time or the interest to do this, or somebody else who might have access to several samples of a product to make this happen.
