Hi CG,
That is a good story so you're right things can objectively change over time. I've experienced similar things when characterizing a part in the lab and measurements drift (at various rates),which can be so frustrating when you want to take a good set of data and move on.
I agree that the observer is the least well controlled variable by a long chalk. The expectation of improvement over time is a powerful influence.
