I am a fan of a closed box. And I believe over the decades means just that. no passive radiators which are basically sonic wise a port substitute. And done well they are a good substitute but not a true closed box. My only real problem with your use of the term is one of definition not the design.
By the way in many ways at deep bass a transmission line which I was enthralled with in the 70s is like a reflex speaker if it has an open port(which it usually has but doesn't have to have) in that at some point(usually very low in a good line) it has a 4th order roll off. I recall Bud Fried telling me(and showing me) that he thought a transmission line was even better used in the mid range because of the way it could handle the back wave with minimal back reaction.
I do need to add that Dick Shahinian was one of the great guys of audio who should have been better known. My memories of him at shows was his room was an oasis with great, mostly classical music, not show off audiophile stuff and some of the best cheeses to make it even better.
