RE: Passed on only to a minority--GREAT 1950s hi-fi at home image

Great image! Sort of Norman Rockwell-esque. And, I generally agree with you.
My father was the son of a coal miner. And probably would have remained within that cultural milieu had he not been drafted into the US Army for WWII and become a radioman. When he returned after the war, he initially worked as an electrician and then entered Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia and became an electrical engineer. He taught me how to solder and we built Dynaco, Eico, and other kits together. I only belatedly realized, as I rejected so much of my parent's generation's thinking and values reflexively as a member of the 60's generation, the impact of their experiences and music on me. What you observe, John, seems to have played out in my father's life and then mine. I believe your musings are right on target.
