In Reply to: Would any existing audio mag even consider doing a review of classic or antique equipment? posted by edta on June 6, 2004 at 19:28:08:
Oh my - what a stir it would make if an old piece of equipment was given a "just as great" review today.Consider this fiction ... XYZ company 1987 amplifier is given a "great" review in the latest mag - in fact it was so "great" that is is said to "compete with many of todays newest amps" - even including XYZ own.
God Forbid!!
Who would this serve?
From a manufactorers point of view - certainly XYZ would rather have people think that the newest breed of amps are indeed "better" (hell - everyone should know that "new" = "better"), certainly XYZ would rather generate revenue (much required) by advertising & selling/moving new gear, which arguably wont happen to the same degree if the old stuff starts selling very well on e-bay, and certainly and maybe most importantly - why would XYZ want to advertise or promote a brand new line of "better" amps within the same magazine(s) that has just reviewed the older version heard to be "just as good as new".
Nope - manufactorers must move "new" gear to survive - and the magazines are a conduit for them to do just that.
