I want to know what others hear and nothing more than what they hear.
That can only be done without bias if the components are hidden, playing at the same SPLs, and then evaluated by someone who has already proven he CAN hear a difference. I'll accept that speakers and most phono cartridges have audible differences to most audiophiles, so no proof of audible differences is required for them. With all the name-calling directed at objective audiophiles, many golden ears fail to observe that we are ONLY interested in sound quality and no other attributes that could bias our opinions of sound quality. Measurements can bias sound quality opinions too.
The only measurements we need are those done to be sure two components are playing at the same volume ... and a brief blind test to determine whether we really can hear differences, or just imagine hearing them. Only objective audiophiles are willing to admit they could imagine component differences -- golden ears are too busy boasting about their latest "upgrade" to admit they could have this "imagined differences effect" happen to their oh so golden ears!.
Objective audiophiles need no measurements and ultimately judge a component subjectively, just like the golden ears ... except we don't need to know the brand name to appreciate how good a component sounds to us.
I want to know what components "critics" think are great based on what they hear AND components they think are bad based on what they hear. Only then can I listen to the same components and decide if the critic has similar preferences to me.
Measurements only suggest some engineering faults a listener might hear -- they are helpful mainly because "Happy Face" critics give us too many positive reviews ... which are not very helpful at all.
If the critics did their jobs objectively, we wouldn't need measurements.
