Re: Polar response again

This is very good...for a speaker, undoubtedly much better than most. I think Audax claims a uniform directivity 4 way driver but I haven't seen any data so far. As good as this is by comparison to others, note that output is down much less 105 degrees off axis at 125 hz (-7 db) than a typical tweeter is about 30 to 45 degrees off axis above 10 khz. This suggests that the directivity of total energy propagation should be still far less directional at low frequencies than at high frequencies even for this model. Among the better ones, Morrells look like they are only down about -5 db 30 degrees off axis which is typical for 1" drivers. The AR 3/4" dome was down -5db 60 degrees off axis at 15 khz, still one of the best ones I've seen. Factors affecting directivity of course include diameter, geometry, and locating the dome in a small hornlike well which improves efficieny at the expense of dispersion. There is no law saying you only have to use one tweeter and some of the more successful models including ones I've heard used indirect firing supplimental tweeters including Snell AIIIi (one of my favorites) Vandersteen 5, Wilson. The Opera Tibaldi I heard last weekend used 4. Even line array tweeters such as those used in some early McIntosh speakers, Infinity, Bozak, and those equivalent to line arrays such as long ribbons means that you will be off axis for at least some of them no matter where you sit. This is still IMO largely unexplored territory.
