Polar response again

Well, as you can see, there are (IMO quite successful) attempts to get away from the omnidirectional response in the bass.

What you hear is what comes from the speakers + what comes from the room. However, with more directional speakers that part that comes from the room gets smaller (critical distance gets greater, reflections fall below threshold of audibility). That's one way to address predictable issues. Boundary reinforcement: maybe that active speakers are the way to go: they are designed to play without reinforcement and when you come close to room boundaries you simply reduce the output of the drivers.
